Search engine optimisation has changed more in the past 18 months than in the preceding five years. AI Overviews are pulling content from pages that weren't ranking before. Core Web Vitals are now a confirmed ranking signal. And the old tricks — keyword stuffing, exact-match domains, link farms — are being penalised more aggressively than ever.
This is the condensed version of the 47-point audit we run on every new client site. Not theory — the items that have consistently moved rankings when fixed.
Foundation: crawlability and indexation
Before anything else, verify Google can find and index your pages. You'd be surprised how many sites have self-inflicted crawling problems:
- Check robots.txt isn't blocking your most important pages. Run site:yourdomain.com in Google and compare the result count to your actual page count.
- Verify canonical tags are correct — especially on e-commerce and blog sites where pagination, filters, and tags create duplicate content.
- Check for orphan pages: pages with no internal links pointing to them. Google can't discover them, so they'll never rank regardless of how good their content is.
- Verify sitemap.xml is submitted in Google Search Console and contains no 404 or redirect URLs.
Core Web Vitals: the ones that actually matter
INP replaced FID as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Most teams haven't updated their performance monitoring to track it. Here's the current triad:
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): target < 2.5 seconds. Primary fix: optimise your hero image (format, size, preload). This single fix improves LCP for 80% of sites we audit.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): target < 0.1. Primary cause: images and ads without explicit dimensions. Secondary cause: web fonts swapping from fallback to loaded font.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint): target < 200ms. Primary cause: JavaScript executing on the main thread during user interaction. Fix: reduce bundle size, defer non-critical scripts, use Web Workers for heavy computation.
Semantic HTML and structured data
Google's ability to understand page content has improved dramatically, but it still relies heavily on proper semantic HTML to understand page structure. Two quick wins:
- One H1 per page, matching the primary keyword intent. Not the site name — the topic of the page.
- Structured data (JSON-LD) for: articles (blog posts), products (e-commerce), FAQs (any page with Q&A), local business (service businesses). These are the types most likely to trigger rich results in 2026.
AI Overviews: how to get cited
Google's AI Overviews pull content from pages that answer a specific question clearly and concisely. Getting cited in an AI Overview is increasingly valuable as it can drive visibility even for queries where you don't hold a top-10 organic result.
The pattern for content that gets cited: answer the primary question in the first two sentences of the section, then provide supporting context. Google's AI prefers content structured as 'direct answer first, explanation second' — the opposite of how many long-form articles are written.
Internal linking: the most underused lever
Internal linking is the single highest-ROI technical SEO task for most established sites. It passes PageRank between your own pages, improves crawl depth, and provides contextual signals about page topic.
- Every new article should link to 3-5 existing articles on related topics. Don't use 'click here' — use descriptive anchor text that contains the target page's primary keyword.
- Your most important pages (service pages, product pages) should have internal links from your highest-traffic pages. Map your traffic and make sure it flows toward conversion.
- Audit for orphan pages monthly and add them to the internal linking structure.
